> Effexor XR is indicated for refractory depression up here in Canada. It works similar to the SSRI antidepressants like Prozac and Paxil, but the manufacturer says it also works on another neurotransmitter called norepinephrine as well as on serotonin. This should theoretically make Effexor similar in activity to the tricyclic (TCA) antidepressants. But neurotransmitter binding studies have shown that Effexor does not bind to the norepinephrine reuptake receptor that strongly, so you could consider this antidepressant to be similar to the SSRIs in action.

> This being said, the SSRI Paxil has be shown to be of some use in Social Phobia, so maybe Effexor could have a similar effect. It is worth giving it a two or three month trial to see if it helps. You will need to stay on Paxil at least that long to see if it will work for social phobia.

>With regard to the side effects of Effexor. They will be fairly bad for about the first two to three weeks, until your body adjusts to the drug. I recommend that you tough it out for the three weeks and see if the side effects lessen. If they don't, you may have to switch, but if they do you may be able to live a more productive life with your social phbia under control. Give it a shot and good luck. - Cam W.
